WEB Damage resilience and endurance concepts in biogenic ceramics

Biominerals are biogenically generated inorganic solid-state materials. Evolutionary optimization over hundreds of millions of years led to high-performance materials with remarkably high functional density. A key material property that is under selection pressure is the bioceramic’s damage tolerance since it is directly linked to the organisms’ survival. In this contribution, we will present different design concepts of bivalves, which enhance their endurance against shard and blunt contact damage. They typically base on functional gradation and hybrid design, which gives us a new impetus for the development of structurally and compositionally graded ceramics.
