Plenary Lecture

WEB FEMS and coatings, some highlights

Audimax

The presentation will be two-fold. In a first part, the Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS) will be presented. FEMS was founded in 1987 by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Materialkunde (DGM), The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and the French Metals and Materials Society (SF2M). Today it federates about 30 national societies throughout Europe. It is most well-known for its successful series of EUROMAT conferences (http://www.fems.org/news/newly-edited-history-fems). FEMS has substantiated its position as a leading body on Materials Science and carry the voices and needs of its Member Societies and their members. It will be of the utmost importance with the materials challenges of today. The second part of the talk will illustrate actions in the framework of surface functionalisation that has been gaining considerable importance in terms of applications, ending with more personal pieces of research. In particular, we will show how piezochromic functions can be included in sol-gel coatings and potentially offer outstanding gains in terms of impact inspections on composite panels used for aeronautics. Interface properties will be discussed in some more details.
